Orwell Dam Information
Orwell Dam is an earthen embankment dam located about 30 miles from Breckenridge, Otter Tail, Minnesota.
The dam, which is on the Otter Tail River, was primarily built for Flood Risk Reduction purposes, but also serves for Fish and Wildlife Pond and Recreation benefits.
The dam was designed by CEMVP and commissioned in 1953 and is currently owned by USACE – St. Paul District.
Orwell Dam Structure
The Orwell Dam is approximately 1,355 feet (413 m) long, 10 feet (3 m) high and has a structural volume of 168,000 cubic yards (128,445 cubic metres).
Orwell Dam Storage Capacity & Surface Area
The reservoir has a normal storage capacity of 8,050 acre-ft (9,930 Ml) and maximum capacity of 20,600 acre-ft (25,410 Ml).
The surface area of the reservoir is 805 acres (326 ha) and the total catchment area is 1,820 square miles (4,714 square kilometres).
Orwell Dam Spillway
The dam has a 33 feet (10 m) wide controlled spillway with a maximum discharge capacity of 20400 cubic feet per second (578 cubic metres per second).
