The dam, which is on the Beaver River, was primarily built for Hydroelectric purposes, but also serves for Recreation and Flood Risk Reduction benefits.

The dam was designed by Post Tensioning Anchor Design – Kleinschmidt Asso and commissioned in 1924 and is currently owned by Hudson River-Black River Regulating District.
