The dam, which is on the Big Sandy Creek River, was primarily built for Water Supply purposes, but also serves for Recreation benefits.

The dam was designed by FREESE AND NICHOLS;HENNINGSON, DURHAMAND, RICHARDSON, INC and commissioned in 1956 and is currently owned by CITY OF BOWIE.
