Whitney Dam Information

Whitney Dam is an earthen embankment dam located in Waco, Hill, Texas.

The dam, which is on the Brazos River, was primarily built for Flood Risk Reduction purposes, but also serves for Fish and Wildlife Pond, Recreation, Hydroelectric and Water Supply benefits.

The dam was designed by CESWF and commissioned in 1951 and is currently owned by USACE – Fort Worth District.

The Whitney Dam is approximately 7,538 feet (2,298 m) long, 159 feet (48 m) high and has a structural volume of 2,253,300 cubic yards (1,722,772 cubic metres).

Whitney Dam Storage Capacity & Surface Area

The reservoir has a normal storage capacity of 627,100 acre-ft (773,515 Ml) and maximum capacity of 2,100,400 acre-ft (2,590,801 Ml).

The surface area of the reservoir is 23,560 acres (9,534 ha) and the total catchment area is 17,656 square miles (45,729 square kilometres).
